چکیده

The change from a Mendelian to a genomic breeding paradigm poses three challenges: to map the components of animal breeding onto a genomic conceptual frame work; to show how the genetic parameters comprising a genomic analysis can be obtained from actual farm data; and to show how genomic parameters can guide a breeding program. We are currently heavily engaged in the second challenge, but should start thinking seriously about the third. Negotiating the shift to marker assisted selection (MAS), will involve: (1) Determining marker-QTL phase (a QTL for which this has been achieved will be termed a "Marked QTL, MQTL"); (2) Tracing MQTL across the generations; (3) Incorporating MQTL in the existing selection program by identifying and creating a "selection space"; (4) Changing the existing selection program to enable more effective utilization of MQTL; and (5) Expanding reproduction opportunities to further exploit MAS. These components are discussed in some detail and applied to MAS programs in dairy cattle and layer chickens.

From Phenotype to Genotype: Towards Positional Cloning of Quantitative Trait Loci in Livestock? (Also published on-line in AgBiotechNet at URL http://agbio.cabweb.org)

It is well established that quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying economically important traits can be mapped in livestock using existing marker maps either in experimental crosses or outbred populations. The resolution that can be achieved using conventional designs, however, is usually insufficient for positional cloning of the corresponding genes. We briefly describe approaches to fine-ma...

Identification and Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated with Salinity Tolerance in Rice (Oryza Sativa) Using SSR Markers

Salinity stress is one of the most widespread soil problems next to drought, in rice growing areas. ReducingSodium (Na+), while maintaining Potassium (K+) uptake in rice are traits that would aid in salinity tolerance. Therefore, the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with those for Na+ and K+uptake, will enable breeders to use marker-assisted selection...

شناسایی نشانگرهای ریزماهواره پیوسته با مکان‌های ژنی کمی برای مقاومت به بلایت فوزاریومی سنبله در گندم

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most destructive diseases of wheat causing significant reduction in grain yield and quality. Development of resistant varieties is an effective, economical and enviromentally safe way to control FHB disease. A major QTL (quantitative trait locus) for Fusarium head blight resistance, Qfhs.ndsu-3BS, derived from cv. Sumai 3, has been identified and verifie...

The Pattern of Linkage Disequilibrium in Livestock Genome

Linkage disequilibrium (LD) is bases of genomic selection, genomic marker imputation, marker assisted selection (MAS), quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, parentage testing and whole genome association studies. The Particular alleles at closed loci have a tendency to be co-inherited. In linked loci this pattern leads to association between alleles in population which is known as LD. Two metr...
